TWENTY YEARS A BLOG.



So, where was I? Oh yeah, The BLOG turns 20 today.

I suppose I could go on blabbing about myself and what the Blog has meant to me, but I thought it might be better to have a few of my friends say a few words instead. I do however want to thank all the readers over the last twenty years. And of course the many super talented photographers who have generously submitted their work here. And I would be completely remiss, if I didn't mention my loyal sponsors. Thank you for keeping this ship afloat over the last twenty years. Especially CINNAMON RAINBOWS and BACK TO HEALTH. I need to thank the surfers themselves. You guys are the best. I know I have talked a few of you into paddling out into less than stellar conditions. But really, how bad could it be? You got wet and you caught a few waves. And nobody got hurt. Plus I kind of made each one of you famous by appearing on these pages over the years.

Finally, I need to thank my wife Cory who stood by me for the last twenty years, as I stressed over getting the Blog out in time. She has proofread every one of them, and helped me so much by picking out typos and corrected my grammar. We missed out on vacations, and just having long weekends to ourselves for 20 years. And now that we have come to this crossroad, I plan on making up for lost time. So, what am I going to do?

Well, I'm going BI-WEEKLY for a year or two, and eventually monthly.

ALL IN ALL, I WANT TO THANK EACH AND EVERY ONE OF YOU FOR FOLLOWING THIS CRAZY JOURNEY FOR THE LAST TWENTY YEARS. I'LL STILL BE POSTING, JUST NOT EVERY WEEK.

"I first met Ralph back in 1979 down on a life-changing surf trip to Tortola in the British Virgins. Little did we know it, but even decades later, that seminal foray into the unknown still ranks as perhaps the #1 foreign surf trip of our lives. And if I’ve learned anything in the 45 years since sharing those first tropical sunburns; the essence that makes Ralph ‘Ralph’, is his commitment. This is no secret to those of us that know him, he exemplifies that very spirit every day of his life. Your mission has been fully accomplished, and as you move on to other adventures in your life, know that your Blog has left an indelible mark, an impact that extends far beyond just New England. Ed O'Connell was one of the most loved surf photographers in New England. A US ARMY Vietnam Veteran who saved the lives of so many ARMY Grunts in Nam in 68-69 as a Medic on board those Dust Off Hueys. He was a close and dear friend of mine.

When he passed on July 1st, 2014 I swore I'd keep his memory and legacy alive by giving him this weekly corner. He loved surfing and he loved taking photos of all the surfers. Not just those who could really stand out. He shot every one. As long as I shall live and breathe the salt air, there will be a corner dedicated to Ed.

Congratulations on 20 years of producing your blog every week.  That is an extraordinary accomplishment! I remember meeting you in March or April of 2020 at a popular beach access in Massachusetts on a structure that no longer exists. (That’s not giving away a secret spot is it?)
It was when the New Hampshire beaches were closed down due to the pandemic and all the surfing was happening in Massachusetts.  I know it wasn’t great for the surfers but it was like nirvana for me, seeing all of them in my back yard!

In any case, I had been taking pics of surfers for a few years at the time.  I remember you looked over at me and asked if I took a lot of surf shots.  When I said yes, you suggested I send you a few and that, if they were any good, you would post them on your blog. 
I had no idea what that really meant but I figured I’d give it a shot.
I think we’ve shared a few pictures since then, and thanks to you, I’ve gotten to know a lot more surfers.  I love it when one of them comes up to me on the beach and thanks me for finally getting him or her on Ralph's Pics! As I congratulate you on this milestone I honor you for these things that I know and appreciate about you:

You are an authentic person.  What you see is what you get. 
You are a man of strong convictions, whether it is your opinion about world events, drop-ins or who needs our help and how, you don’t mince words.
You love your family, your friends and your country.

ORENTHAL SIMPSON AKA "OJ" Passed away. And nobody gives a shit. He was 76 years old. OJ got away with brutally murdering two innocent people. Nicole Brown Simpson (mother of two of his children) and Ron Goldman. We all know that KSM was not present at OJ's trial. But if he was? This is what I'd guess he would have done when OJ "tried" to put the GUILTY gloves on. That trial and that time period caused the biggest racial divide in the history of this country. Not since the KKK came into power had we witnessed such hatred. Though, these current days with Trump and his MAGANUTS are pretty damn close too. But as far as OJ goes? Good freaking riddance.

And so my friends, please take advantage of this weekly photo shop of the mastermind who planned 9-11 and resulted in the deaths of 3,000 innocent civilians by KSM (Khalid Sheik Mohammed). *Note to self -must pick up a case of ORANGE JUICE at Home Depot this week.

PLEASE KEEP Karen Evans in your thoughts and prayers. Karen is currently battling FTD (Frontotemporal Dementia) a result of damage to neurons in the frontal and temporal lobes of the brain. She's doing remarkably well in dealing with this condition. The Evans have been local icons here for as long as I can remember. All the Surf Families are in full support of Rick, Karen, Matt, Megan and Nick and baby Luka, and of course Mikel. Sending your positive thoughts and prayers are welcome.
